Taking the first step toward psychiatric care can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. At Bright and Associates, LLC, our initial psychiatric evaluations are designed to be thorough, unhurried, and centered entirely around you. Our board-certified psychiatrists and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) take the time to truly understand your history, your symptoms, and your goals before any treatment decisions are made.
We believe that a great psychiatric evaluation is not just a clinical formality — it is the foundation of a treatment relationship built on trust, transparency, and genuine collaboration.
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive clinical interview conducted by a licensed psychiatric provider. It is typically the first appointment in any psychiatric care relationship and gives your provider the full picture they need to make accurate, informed recommendations about your care.
Unlike a brief primary care visit, a psychiatric evaluation at Bright and Associates is a dedicated, in-depth appointment — typically 60 to 90 minutes — with no rushing and no shortcuts.
During your initial evaluation, your psychiatric provider will review and discuss:
• Your current mental health symptoms — what you’re experiencing, how long it’s been happening, and how it’s affecting your daily life
• Your full mental health history — prior diagnoses, past treatment, hospitalizations, and previous psychiatric medications
• Your medical history — physical health conditions, current medications, allergies, and lab work when relevant
• Your family history — mental health and medical conditions in your family that may be clinically relevant
• Your substance use history — past and current use of alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications, and other substances
• Your social and personal history — relationships, work, living situation, trauma history, cultural background, and support systems
• Your personal goals — what you hope to achieve from psychiatric care and what matters most to you
Following the evaluation, your provider will share their clinical impressions, discuss a potential diagnosis if appropriate, and work collaboratively with you to outline a treatment plan — which may include medication, therapy, or both.
At the end of your psychiatric evaluation, you and your provider will discuss next steps together. Depending on your situation, this may include:
• Beginning medication management with follow-up appointments scheduled
• A referral to one of our therapists for psychotherapy — either alongside or instead of medication
• Additional testing or lab work to rule out medical contributors to your symptoms
• Coordination with your primary care provider or other specialists
• A referral to a higher level of care if clinically indicated
You will never leave your evaluation without a clear understanding of what was discussed and what comes next. Our providers take the time to answer your questions and make sure you feel informed and empowered..
